Step 1: Rough-Cut the Laminate
Measure laminate pieces so they’re about 1 inch larger than needed on all sides
- Use tin snips for edge strips
- Use a table saw or laminate cutting tool for large surfaces
- Mark cuts clearly using a straightedge
Step 2: Start with End Pieces
Ensure the underlayment is clean and dust-free
- Apply contact cement to both the laminate strips and the underlayment edges
- Allow cement to dry 5–10 minutes until tacky

Step 3: Scrape Off Softened Caulk

Step 4: Apply Contact Cement to the Top and Laminate
Apply contact cement evenly to:
- The back of the laminate sheet
- The top of the underlayment
Step 5: Position the Laminate
To prevent premature contact:
- Place ½-inch wood dowels every 6–12 inches on the countertop
- Set laminate on top of the dowels
- Align the back edge flush with the underlayment
Step 6: Remove the Dowels
Starting at the center:
- Remove dowels one at a time
- Allow laminate to contact the surface gradually
- Press gently as you work outward
Step 7:Apply Pressure
Use a padded 2x4 to apply pressure:
- Start in the center
- Work toward the edges
- Avoid excessive pressure at edges to prevent cracking
Step 8: Trim Excess Laminate
After bonding:
- Use a router with a flush-trim bit
- Cut remaining excess with tin snips where needed
Step 9: Smooth the Edges
- Use a laminate file to bevel edges
- Pull downward only
- Clean adhesive residue with mineral spirits
Step 10: Install the Countertop and Seal Joints
Secure the countertop to base cabinets with screws.
Seal the joint between the countertop and wall or backsplash:
- Mask with painter’s tape
- Apply kitchen and bath–rated sealant
- Tool smooth immediately
- Remove tape
Sealing prevents moisture intrusion and completes the installation.
